Wednesday 22nd March – Windsurf ***** River Stour at Wrabness –
sunny.
Foil – 19.94 knot max, 18.61 knot ave., 12.82 knot hour, 16.68 knot
mile, 63.94 km (year PB)., 14.68 knot alpha.
Starboard Freeride 150 (LW) and a Evolution Freeride foil with a Tushingham
Bolt 5m.
After missing a cracking days windsurf foiling yesterday as I had an
appointment to pick up a hearing aid, old age has defiantly arrived but we
arrived at Specsavers and it was not there so I could have gone as they
should have phoned but we packed a picnic and had a nice walk along
Felixstowe prom before visiting an old friend so we certainly did not waste
the day! The wall to wall sunshine continued all day again with a good 20
knot wind from the NE, a mate Robert messaged to say he had had a great
wing on the Stour at Bradfileld yesterday and was heading there again today
hoping to be on the water at two as high tide at Mistley was 4.20! So I
decided to head over to the Stour with Mag taking lunch with us, as I sail
at Wrabness you can launch earlier than Bradfield so the aim was to leave
Felixstowe at 11.30 which gave me enough time to do my exercises in the
back garden! It is a nice drive over to deepest Essex, the only problem was
Mistley had a diversion which only added a mile to the journey as we had to
go via Lawford! There was no one at the end of Wall Lane so we got prime
position and I soon had my foil board set up in the calm of the rigging
area. Once over the sea wall you could see it was quite breezy out in the
middle of the river but the wind is cross off at the launch beach, the tide
was still very low so I walked up to the large wooden beach bungalows with
my wind gauge and with the wind gusting to 20 knots and even windier
further out I decided to rig my 5m but not before I had lunch in the van
with Mag! Wetsuit on I had to wade out to deep water launching about 1.45
and had at least half an hour before I was joined on the water by half a
dozen from Bradfield, a mix of fin, wing and windsurf foilers! I soon
reached the wind line and was soon up and flying managing to fly for about
90% of the session. I slowly sailed down past Bradfield making to Mistley
Quay before I started the long beat back, I love foiling with small sails
as gybing is so easy, there was a nice swell running down the river and I
had some fun going broad what I thought was fairly fast even if the speeds
on the gps were a little disappointing but great fun none the less! I had
several runs in front of the launch beach I decided to head is as I been
out ages and was getting knackered. I checked my gps and I had done 29
nautical miles so I decided to do a few more runs and just missed sailing
40 miles, a year’s PB!!! Time to call it a day as I was truly knackered
now and joined Mag in the van for a cuppa and chocolate bar to hear about
her walk to the Nature Reserve! So another top day on the Stour well worth
the 50 mile round trip to get there even if we didn’t get home until
6.30!
